At 12:30 a.m. on June 1st, the old Jorge Chavez International Airport —the former gateway to the Peruvian capital, Lima— marked its final historic moment. With a symbolic turning off of the lights, the terminal located on Faucett Avenue, Callao region, officially closed its doors after more than 60 years, marking the end of an era for millions of Peruvians who saw it become the setting for farewells, welcomes, dreams, and reunions.

The scene was filled with emotion. As the lights went out, the process of transferring all operational staff, technological equipment, documentation, and other logistical elements to the new terminal began immediately.

Located just beside the old one, the new terminal is expected to welcome passengers into a more modern and spacious facility.

Throughout the day prior to the closure, people came to the airport to say goodbye to the place.

There were hugs, selfies, tears, and many stories told in hushed voices by those who once waited there for a family member, said goodbye to a loved one, or experienced an unforgettable memory in its hallways.

The old Jorge Chavez terminal became part of the everyday life of Lima and the country. Artists, athletes, migrants, tourists, and politicians passed through its doors.

It was also the setting for multiple media coverage, massive receptions, and, above all, personal moments that now live only in memory.

Although the new airport promises technological upgrades, greater capacity, and a renewed travel experience, some citizens expressed nostalgia for details such as the old terminals pedestrian entrance and the warmth that only years can give to a place.

With the closure of the terminal on Faucett Avenue, Jorge Chavez enters a new chapter. But for many, that old airport that turned off its lights will remain bright in the memory of those who once passed through it.
