The Official Gazette El Peruano continues to hold a leading position among Peru’s most trusted media outlets.

In 2026, it has consolidated its status as the country's most trusted print media outlet, according to the Digital News Report 2026 by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

Moreover, it ranks second among the most trusted media outlets across all formats.

From 2022 to 2025, the Official Gazette El Peruano ranked second in public trust. It held the top position in 2021.

According to the study, El Peruano's trust rating increased from 59% in 2025 to 63% in 2026.

However, the report notes that "trust in news overall is down 8pp to its lowest level since 2022, at a time of deep political unrest."

In 2026, El Peruano achieved a positive trust score of 63%, placing just one percentage point behind RPP Noticias, which increased its rating by one point compared with the previous year, reaching 64%.

The Official Gazette El Peruano's trust rating is higher than that of other media outlets, including El Comercio (56%), Latina Noticias (56%), TV Peru Noticias (55%), La Republica (55%), Gestion (54%), Canal N (54%), Exitosa (53%), and America TV Noticias (52%), among others.

Background

El Peruano is the oldest newspaper in the Americas.

It was founded by Simon Bolivar in 1825 under the name Peruano Independiente, with the original purpose of promoting and disseminating the new republican ideals. It was initially published on a weekly basis.

In 1827, it officially became the publication of record for government decrees and general orders, establishing itself as the primary source for the dissemination of laws and regulations in Peru.

In 1868, following the modernization of the State Printing Office, it began daily publication.

In 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded its editions from 1868 to 1900 the Memory of the World for Latin America and the Caribbean distinction, recognizing its entire 19th-century collection.

The announcement was made by UNESCO in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, following the 14th Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Committee for UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme (MoWLAC).

"The collection of 19th-century editions of the Official Gazette El Peruano (from the second half of 1868 to 1900), comprising 54 physical volumes, stands out for being the most complete one safeguarded in Peruvian territory," UNESCO noted.
