The latest report issued by the
Multisectoral Commission in Charge of the National Study of El Niño Phenomenon (Enfen) estimates that high temperatures are likely to occur along the Peruvian coast, as well as moderate to heavy rains, mainly in the northern coast and northern highlands, in the summer of 2024.
Quispe affirmed that the higher the probability that coastal El Niño and global El Niño will last until the summer of 2024, the higher the chance that rains will intensify and high temperatures —above the normal average— will continue, due to the warming of the sea surface temperature.
"The probabilities have increased, and that will result in heavier rains," she stressed.
The specialist emphasized that, according to the latest Enfen report, the probability that coastal El Niño will occur in the summer of 2024 went from 77% to 84%, and that of global El Niño went from 82% to 88%.
Quispe explained that this study indicates that the weather event will hit with a weak to moderate intensity.
According to Enfen, global El Niño started in June and is more likely to be of weak magnitude in the winter before moving to moderate magnitude in spring.
