The Peruvian Government and private clinics unanimously reached an agreement for the care of COVID-19 patients in exchange for a reasonable rate.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health noted that as part of this agreement, patients who require specialized hospital care can be referred from public hospitals to private clinics, provided that SIS and EsSalud pay the expenses incurred for such care.

The agreement was reached after a meeting featuring Ministers Victor Zamora (Health), Maria Antonieta Alva (Economy and Finance), heads of the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), and the National Superintendence of Health (Susalud), as well as representatives of the Association of Private Clinics of Peru (ACP).

The event was also attended by Archbishop of Lima Monsignor Carlos Castillo and National Agreement Executive-Secretary Max Hernandez.

The deal signals the willingness of both sides to dialogue and reach an agreement, seeks to increase the availability of ICU beds in the Peruvian health system, and responds to the need to mobilize all their resources to guarantee the right to access to health services with the necessary quality and timing, in the midst of a pandemic that forces us all to prioritize life and health above all else.

Within this framework, the Government intended to set an adequate rate for patients who cannot be provided care at public health care facilities and —therefore— must go to private establishments.
