Thousands of locals and tourists joined Saint Sebastian Day celebrations in Cusco to the rhythm of typical dances and by attending a procession and mass; all this to celebrate their Patron Saint of the district that bears his name.

Festivities began on Tuesday afternoon and included dances, fireworks and a mass at a church that dates back to colonial times. The traditional procession took place on Wednesday.

The main square was filled with 20 troupes displaying multicolored dances native to provinces in such region. Performances were led by mayordomos or alferados —those in charge of organizing the festivity— and saw the presence of municipal authorities, Mayor Andmar Sicus and councilmen.

In statements to Andina news agency, San Sebastian Mayor said the celebration is observed since colonial and evangelization times, and has recently grown in popularity to such an extent that Puno region now joins the celebration with 7 dancing troupes.

“Joy fills our hearts and encourages us to commemorate our martyr. I was not able to carry the Patron Saint on my shoulders this year, but I have danced Misticanchi for 18 years before becoming an authority, in fact, I have, since I was a child,” he said.

Locals are set to take part in the pilgrimage to the district’s general cemetery today. Cultural and academic activities will be conducted as well.

The cacharpari, or farewell activities, will take place on Sunday.
