Dakar 2019: Peru anticipates US$58 million impact on its economy

19:00 | Lima, Jun. 5.

Peru will be the sole host of Dakar's 41st edition next year, which will translate into a S/190 million (about US$58 million) economic impact for the Andean country, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia affirmed.

In a press conference on Monday, Valencia said the Dakar Rally 2019 will take place entirely in Peru on January 6-17, thus boosting its domestic economy.

In this sense, the event will have a positive effect on the country's image in the international arena, based on results of the 2018 edition, when the rally crossed the Inca nation.

The off-road endurance race will draw lots of tourists —mainly domestic— and strengthen Peru's presence in international media.

"This year will be particularly interesting because we intend to show additional destinations like Moquegua and Tacna," he stated.

Dakar Rally 2018

According to studies conducted on January 3-11 this year, the Dakar Rally 2018 generated an economic impact of more than S/130 million (about US$39.7 million) as a result of investments, as well as tourists and local residents' spending.

The tourism-related economic impact —meaning the expenditure incurred by domestic and foreign visitors— accounted for 58% of the total figure.

It must be noted that over a million people attended the rally and related events.
