Cyclone Yaku: State of emergency declared in districts of Lima and Callao

The Government has declared a state of emergency in 18 districts of Metropolitan Lima and in four of Callao, for 60 calendar days, due to the imminent threat of heavy rains that Cyclone Yaku is expected to indirectly pose in the capital city this week.

According to Supreme Decree No. 035-2023-PCM published on Sunday in the Official Gazette El Peruano, the districts of Metropolitan Lima where the state of emergency was declared are Chorrillos, Cieneguilla, El Agustino, Independencia, La Molina, La Victoria, Lima, and Los Olivos.

The list also includes Lurigancho, Lurin, Pachacamac, Puente Piedra, Rimac, San Juan de Lurigancho, San Juan de Miraflores, Santa Anita, Villa El Salvador, and Villa Maria del Triunfo.

In Peru's major port city of Callao, the districts where the preparedness measure was declared are Callao, Carmen de la Legua Reynoso, Mi Peru, and Ventanilla.

State of emergency in regions

The supreme decree also provides that a state of emergency has been declared in various districts of some provinces within the regions of Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junin, Lima Provinces, Moquegua, Puno, and Tacna.

The declaration of a state of emergency has been approved for a period of sixty (60) calendar days in order to implement exceptional, immediate, and necessary actions to minimize the existing Very High Risk, as well as the corresponding measures of response and rehabilitation," the decree reads.

Within this period of time, regional and local authorities, in coordination with sectors of the Executive Branch, will execute the aforementioned measures and actions.

"Said actions must have a direct causal link between the interventions and the event, and can be modified according to the needs and security elements that may arise during their execution, when supported by technical studies conducted by the competent entities," the document states.
