COVID-19 care facility attached to San Isidro Labrador Hospital opened in Peru

13:10 | Lima, Apr. 12.

After only seven days of construction, the new care facility attached to San Isidro Labrador Hospital —located on an area of 1,600 square meters in Lima's Ate Vitarte district— was put into operation and is ready to treat coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) reported.

The launch took place Saturday in the presence of Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra.

The establishment will be equipped with 24 mechanical ventilators in 3 intensive surveillance units, in addition to monitors, mobile respiratory carts, and secretion aspirators.

San Isidro Labrador Hospital had 150 beds for COVID-19 patients and other 150 have been made available today.

EsSalud Executive-President Fiorella Molinelli highlighted the importance of the new care facility in the face of the health emergency as a result of the coronavirus spread throughout the country.

"San Isidro Labrador Hospital adds 300 beds to treat moderate patients with respiratory failure due to COVID-19. Additionally, this medical facility has 24 intensive surveillance beds, equipped with mechanical ventilators, important if patients experience a decompensation event during their stay," she added.

Molinelli remarked that the institution's next challenge will be to replicate a hospital with the same characteristics in regions lacking infrastructure.

The EsSalud representative announced new arrangements with the Armed Forces to achieve said purpose.

It must be noted that geriatric patients who used to be treated at San Isidro Labrador Hospital have been transferred to other medical centers such as San Juan de Dios Clinic.

The event also featured Health Minister Victor Zamora.
