The president of the Peruvian Chess Federation, Augusto Millones, said Monday that Deysi Cori's triumph at the world junior championships in India has confirmed that Peru is a chess power in Latin America along with Cuba.

Millones noted that the outstanding performance of 18-year-old Cori and other chess players has put Peru ahead of Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

"We are hot on the heels of Cuba in the Latin American ranking, and overcome it does not depend on the skills of our children, but on improving the economic contribution to the sport. That makes a difference," he said.

Millones said that Deysi Cori's gold medal "is a clear signal" that she has what it takes to overcome fellow Peruvian Grandmaster Julio Granda, one of the most prominent figures in the sport in recent times.
