Copa America: Peru defeats Paraguay, moves to semifinals

The Peruvian squad claimed a 4-3 penalty victory against its Paraguayan counterpart in a quarterfinals game of the 2021 Copa America tournament on Friday evening.

The match was played at Pedro Ludovico Teixeira Olympic Stadium in the Brazilian city of Goiania.

First half

During the first half, the event saw an initial goal by Paraguay's Gustavo Gomez Portillo (11').

However, minutes later, soccer fans witnessed Peruvian-Italian 'Man of the Match' Gianluca Lapadula score two goals (21' and 40').

Prior to the first half's end, Gomez Portillo was given the red card.

Second half

Following the break, the goal of Junior Alonso (54') set the partial tie.

Nonetheless, Peru's midfielder Yoshimar Yotun managed to score from outside the box in the 80th minute.

Regretfully, Andre Carrillo was expelled from the game five minutes later.

Despite Peruvian efforts, Paraguay's Gabriel Avalos slid the ball into the counterpart's net in the 90th minute, thus claiming the equalizer.

Penalties

During the penalty-kick session, Peru scored 4 goals versus 3 by Paraguay.

As a result, the Incas have qualified for the tournament's semifinals.

Peru's next opponent on July 5 will be the winner of tonight's match between Brazil and Chile.
