Within the framework of the 2023 complementary municipal elections, 19,107 citizens in 11 districts across Peru are expected to turn out at polling stations today to elect their municipal authorities, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reported.

The complementary municipal elections are held in the following districts: Recta (Amazonas region), Canis and Aco (Ancash region), Lari (Arequipa region), Chimban and Pion (Cajamarca region), Manitea (Cusco region), Salcabamba and Chinchihuasi (Huancavelica region), Aparicio Pomares (Huanuco region), and Huamantanga (Lima region).

The district of Ninabamba in Cajamarca region will not take part in said elections as no list of candidates was submitted.

Voters in the above-mentioned districts were not able to elect mayors and councilors, since the 2022 municipal elections were declared null during the corresponding process back in 2022.

According to Article 36 of Municipal Election Law, three causes were identified:

- Null or blank votes, counted together or separately, exceeded two-thirds of the number of votes cast.
- More than a half of voters were absent from the polling stations.
- The existence of serious irregularities —due to infringement of the law— was confirmed, which modified the results of the voting.

For this reason, the 8 decentralized electoral process offices, which are in charge of organizing and conducting the elections, have held coordination meetings with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) assigned to their respective jurisdictions to ensure the safety of elections.

These institutions assure the free exercise of the right to vote, the protection of electoral officials during the fulfillment of their duties, as well as the custody and protection of material, documents, and other elements destined for the conduct of the electoral process.
