CEPLAN: Peru's strategic development plan achieves 80% of SDGs

17:03 | Lima, Apr. 30.

The National Development Strategic Plan by 2050 has achieved 80% of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), said Giofianni Peirano, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the National Center for Strategic Planning (CEPLAN).

The meeting, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), took place from April 25 to 28 at the organization's sub-regional headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

Representatives of the region's 33 countries, of United Nations agencies and of regional, multilateral and civil society organizations warned that Latin America and the Caribbean must pick up the pace to achieve fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) roundtable, which saw the participation of CEPLAN's head, stressed the value of water both as a human right and as a natural and economic resource, as well as the need to implement policies to address the increasing impacts of drought, water stress, pollution and climate change.

In this regard, Peirano mentioned that, at present, 85% of the Peruvian population has access to drinking water sources and sanitation.

"The aim is to achieve it (the goal) in 12 years, thus partially complying with the SDGs of the 2030 agenda between 2033 and 2034," he emphasized.

Peirano also took part at the Roundtable on SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) held on April 28.

In his speech, he highlighted that the governance and governability of water not only depends on having public regulatory systems institutionalized and an articulation with the Central Government.
