Blueberry, a delicious and highly nutritious fruit grown in Peru, was the most exported agro-industrial product by firms operating under Chavimochic Special Project (PECH) in La Libertad region.
According to a report by Central Bank Economic Studies Department, foreign shipments totaled US$185 million, far exceeding those of canned asparagus, which reached US$93.1 million; while avocado exports amounted to US$81.8 million.
Ivan Cosavalente, head of the Trujillo branch at the aforementioned department, estimates blueberries will continue to be PECH’s biggest agro-exports in 2017, totaling over US$200 million.
Information was released during the conferences “Inflation Report” and “Recent Developments in La Libertad’s Economic Activity,” organized by La Libertad Chamber of Commerce and Production (CCPLL) and Peru’s Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR).
According to a BCR report, the United States remains the top export destination for agro-exports of companies operating in the field of PECH with 40.8% participation.
The study also notes the increase in exports to the UK over the past years driven by blueberries exports, top product that invigorated the growth of jobs in Chavimochic.

CCPLL Chairman Hermes Escalante highlighted the joint work done by the business association and BCR so as to boost economic development of the region and the country as a whole.
“The Chamber is currently enhancing a support and counseling service on science, technology and innovation as new distinctive value,” he said.
