The Central Reserve Bank (BCR) on Friday projected 2.6% growth for Peruvian economy this year. Said rate is less than its previous forecast of 2.9%.

"We have lowered from 2.9% to 2.6% the growth rate we had expected," BCR Governor Julio Velarde said during the presentation of the latest Inflation Report.

"We are expecting a growth lower than what we had (projected) three months ago, due to the impact of protests that had more force in January, because in that month the impact of demonstrations was almost 4% of GDP, as we were expecting an expansion of around 3%; nonetheless, it fell more than 1%," he added.

The BCR governor showed growth projections for primary GDP (5.1%) and non-primary GDP (1.9%) for the current year; while in 2024 they will be the following: primary GDP (3%) and non-primary GDP (3.1%).

"We lowered the non-primary to 1.9% (…)," he said.

"This is the highest growth in the region, considering 2.6% for 2023. Next week, I guess, the International Monetary Fund will also disclose that, despite the reduction, Peru will grow more than medium and large countries in the region this year," Velarde expressed.

Likewise, the BCR maintained the expansion projection for gross domestic product (GDP) at 3% for 2024.
