Domestic demand grew 5.2% in the second quarter of 2026 (April-May-June) due to a 5.9% increase in private spending, particularly private investment, although higher public consumption also contributed, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) reported on Thursday.

It indicated that private consumption grew 3.7% in the quarter under review, mainly supported by the dynamism of the labor market, particularly the expansion of employment in the services, commerce, and agricultural and livestock sectors.

The issuing entity explained that the resilience of households' purchasing power, along with lower loan delinquency and access to digital payment channels, contributed to favorable consumption performance.

The BCR stated that private investment once again accelerated its growth in the second quarter of 2026, expanding at an annual rate of 17.6%, driven by accommodative financial conditions reflected in lower lending interest rates and an expansion of credit to businesses.

Meanwhile, capital goods imports continued to grow at double-digit rates.

It noted that 3- and 12-month economic expectations recovered and ended the quarter in optimistic territory, reflecting renewed business confidence.

Public spending grew 2.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, mainly due to increased public consumption, partially offset by a decline in public investment.
