Within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum's Health Working Group (HWG) Plenary Meeting, Peru announced its progress in comprehensive care coverage for pregnant women, minors, and newborn children.

Under the leadership of Peru's Health Ministry, the HWG also addressed in its second work session other topics aimed at improving health care and well-being of the population of the 21 APEC economies.

Deputy Public Health Minister Ricardo Peña gave an account of the scope of the One Health approach, developed by Peru.

This includes optimizing women's health, thereby allowing greater economic participation for this sector of the population.

In this regard, the work of the comprehensive coverage system that facilitates access to health services was explained, prioritizing pregnant women, children, and newborns.

Agenda items

Deputy Minister Peña underscored the agenda proposed by Peru, which this year chairs the APEC meetings.

The included items have to do with the most relevant health problems, and discussing them will allow (members) to learn about the experience of other economies, the official said.

Among them, the deputy minister mentioned women's empowerment, the effects of climate change, and threats to public health.

"Once these interventions are improved, it will translate into a better quality of life and health for the Peruvian population," Peña stated.

"We are already talking with representatives of several participating economies, and we have agreed on some proposals for future work together, and that will definitely help us optimize interventions, to have a global perspective of what is being done at the moment," he indicated.

In this sense, Peña highlighted the experiences shared by representatives of the economies that make up APEC regarding problems such as climate change and epidemics.

In that area, he said, tools were mentioned to timely address public health problems, such as dengue, heat wave, and climate change.

Peña indicated that the latter factor is the main trigger of the dengue problem in Peru.
