Peru's Senior Official for APEC, Minister Renato Reyes, said reaching consensus among member economies to approve a roadmap aimed fostering the transition to
"Let's hope that consensus will be reached to approve this document, which will be titled the Lima Roadmap, aimed at fostering the transition to economic formality across the Asia-Pacific (region)," Minister Reyes indicated.
The diplomat also indicated the concern that over 3 billion people worldwide do not have access to food, much less to essential proteins.
"The APEC team, along with the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international organizations, and the private sector, has been working since 2022 on priorities and identified a very specific issue: developing principles to help reduce food loss and waste in the Asia-Pacific region. The research we conduct shows that, according to the FAO, one third of the world's food production gets lost or wasted, while more than 3 billion people around the world lack access to food," Reyes indicated.
"This creates a barrier to food availability. Besides, it has economic, social, and environmental costs," he added.
Peru's proposal is primarily based on negotiating with the other 20 APEC member economies a formula of principles that help mitigate food loss.
