The participation of Peru in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum has had a multiplier effect on its economy and to date it stands out as one of the leading countries within the bloc, former Foreign Affairs Ministers Oscar Maurtua noted.
“Foreign trade has expanded and is having a positive impact on the Peruvian economy, and leading to a significant increase of exports. Peru has taken advantage of this mechanism, since trade has been liberalized,” he said.
Peru’s trade relationship with APEC economies would exceed US$50 billion, which is approximately equivalent to more than 60% of the country’s foreign trade.
Furthermore, he continued, exports to APEC member countries have grown by 15% so far this century.
Peru comes to this edition of the forum in the Philippines as the host of the 2016 summit, as holder of the Pacific Alliance Presidency and, as one of the countries that are deeply involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations.
“This shows the country’s leadership and will to strengthen its presence in foreign trade with partners in the Pacific basin,” Maurtua was quoted as saying by Andina news agency.
“The image of Peru within the forum has been enhanced and stands out among economies with trade ties to the Pacific basin,” the former government official underlined.
