As part of the APEC for the People program, the international summit "Artificial Intelligence: Technological Challenges for Development" was inaugurated in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Tuesday.

This event is organized by Universidad San Martin de Porres (University of San Martin de Porres) and the Embassy of the United States in Peru, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State. It is held at the university campus in Lima's Santa Anita district.

During the inauguration, Ambassador Carlos Vasquez, 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meetings (SOM), underscored that at the Third Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM3), currently underway in Lima, dialogues and workshops are being promoted focused on addressing AI from different perspectives.

Justin Reynolds, Director of Technology Policy at the U.S. Department of State, said this is the first event on AI organized by the State Department in collaboration with a Latin American partner.

The two-day summit serves as a platform for exchange and collaboration, granting participants the opportunity to learn from technology leaders and explore the potential of AI for regional development.

This meeting brings together leading technology leaders and experts, including Nicolas Robinson Andrade from OpenAI, Alex Le Bienvenu from Microsoft, and Almudena Fernandez from UNDP. They discuss the impact of AI in key areas, such as democracy, economy, education, health, and the private sector.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
