Peru hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum's Third Senior Officials' Meeting in the capital, Lima.

There, delegates from 21 member economies meet from August 11 to 25 to address substantive and cross-cutting issues related to the Asia-Pacific region under the motto of Peru's third Presidency: "Empower. Include. Grow."

During this meeting (SOM3), delegates will continue discussions on trade liberalization and facilitation, more inclusive and sustainable trade, transition to formal economy, economic integration, and promotion of MSMEs growth, among other APEC priorities.

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo announced that her portfolio (Mincetur) will represent Peru at the meetings of the Committee on Trade and Investment (CTI) and its working groups, which are of a technical nature and for capacity strengthening.

In this regard, the third dialogue on "A New Look at the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP)" and the third Digital Week stand out. The latter consists of a series of seminars and panel discussions featuring Peruvian and international experts, which allows knowledge on digital issues to be brought to the public and officials.

In this third edition, artificial intelligence (AI), online consumer protection, digital security, digital ecosystem oriented to trade and MSMEs digital transformation will be discussed.

It will take place from August 21 to 25, with the first three days in person and the last two in virtual format. Those interested in participating in virtual format can access it here.

"With its third Presidency of the APEC forum, Peru consolidates its strategic positioning in the Asia-Pacific (region). This is supported by the successful ministerial meetings on Foreign Trade (in Arequipa last May) and Tourism (in Urubamba last June), and we are confident that the Third Senior Officials' Meeting will also be a success," Minister Galdo stated.

Leadership at APEC

Peru's Presidency focuses on inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, with three priorities: trade and investment for inclusive and interconnected growth, led by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur); innovation and digitalization to promote the transition to formal and global economy; and sustainable growth for resilient development.

"These priorities aim to expand trade, investment, and innovation opportunities, enhancing inclusive well-being and strengthening Peru's global economic influence," Minister Galdo underscored.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.

Between 2000 and 2023, Peru's commercial exchange with APEC member economies grew by an average of 10% annually. Last year alone, APEC accounted for 67% of Peru's trade with the world.
