In the United States, there is greatest interest in continuing the good relations existing with Peru, the South American country's Ambassador to Washington D.C. Hugo de Zela affirmed on Wednesday.

According to the diplomat, authorities of the North American country follow up closely and with great interest the results of the recent presidential runoff election, in which Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori faced each other.

The monitoring —he indicated— revolves around fundamental aspects of the electoral process such as respect for the rules of democracy, the Constitution, and Peruvian laws.

"I have absolute assurance that whoever becomes president, once the (National Elections) Board proclaims (the winner), there will be a major effort to continue with the good relations," he said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

Likewise, the diplomat reminded reporters that the United States is a country important for Peru, being the destination of a large part of its exports, and with which it had signed a Free Trade Agreement.

"From the United States, there is the greatest interest in this continuing during the coming years. On the part of the United States, there will be enormous efforts to do so," he stressed.
