Peru received a new batch of 498,000 pediatric doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer; they will enable the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to continue and expand the vaccination campaign for boys and girls aged 5 to 11 years.

This new cargo arrived at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Callao region on February 3 and was delivered to the warehouses of the National Center for Supply of Strategic Resources in Health (Cenares) to begin the distribution nationwide.

The 498,000 doses are added to the two previous batches of 996,000 doses each that arrived in the country on January 21 and 28.

In total, Peru has received 2,490,000 doses of the pediatric vaccine.

Since the arrival of the first pediatric doses, the Minsa (via Cenares) has distributed 1,992,000 doses nationwide between January 21 and February 2.

These efforts have contributed to supplying doses to all Peruvian regions so as to continue with the "Vacuna Warma" campaign, which will allow minors to be better protected against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and ensure a safe return to in-person classes.

This way, the schedule for the arrival of vaccines for minors is being complied with. For the coming few weeks, the arrival of 3 batches of 498,000 doses each is expected.

As of February 3, a total of 764,513 boys and girls aged between 5 and 11 have already received their first dose. This amount is equivalent to 18.19% of the target population to be immunized, which is composed of 4,036,753 minors.

Vaccine efficacy

According to the protocol, the vaccine to be used in children between 5 and 11 years old is the Comirnaty and 10 micrograms per dose.

According to studies by Pfizer, the vaccine is 90.7% effective.
