2018 elections: Peru President urges responsible voting on Sunday

10:47 | Lima, Oct. 5.

President Martin Vizcarra called on Peruvians to cast a responsible vote this Sunday saying the election of competent regional and local authorities will depend on their decision.

"Elections hold a lot of responsibility, they cannot be regarded as an everyday occurrence," he said in an interview with State-run channel TV Peru.

Vizcarra claimed that everywhere he goes, in small or large communities, he urges citizens to cast a thoughtful and responsible vote.

"We see people unhappy with their authorities everywhere we go. They ask me what I'm doing next to the mayor and I tell them that it was them who elected him, but mistakes can be fixed," the president commented.

In this sense, the statesman asked the population to assess candidates' background, resumé, and honesty.

On the other hand, he emphasized National Police and Public Ministry are working together to counter criminal activity at regional and local levels.

Also, he referred to a corruption case involving former La Victoria mayor saying: "When we talk about combating corruption, we mean no matter who falls."
