Nuam, the holding company that brings together the stock exchanges of Santiago (Chile), Colombia, and Lima (Peru), granted its first "nuam Recognition" award to
Peru's Central Reserve Bank Governor Julio Velarde, in recognition of his nearly two decades at the institution's helm and his contribution to the country's economic, financial, and institutional development.
The ceremony, recently held in Lima, brought together representatives of various stakeholders in the country and the capital market.
It was presided over by nuam's CEO Juan Pablo Cordoba.
The "nuam Recognition" award is part of a policy to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of their economies in any of the three markets that make up the organization.
Similarly, it recognizes those who have helped create the conditions necessary to strengthen their capital markets.
"Capital markets are built not only on infrastructure, technology, and transactions. They also require strong institutions, stability, and a long-term vision," Cordoba stated.
"Recognizing Julio Velarde means recognizing a career that has helped build these conditions in Peru," he noted.
During the ceremony, Cordoba held a conversation with Velarde about key moments in his career, his experience leading the BCR, as well as the role economic and financial stability plays in capital markets development.
"One of the reasons we wanted to launch this recognition in Peru with Julio Velarde is precisely that his career allows us to look beyond a single institution or a specific period," Cordoba said.
"There has been a sustained contribution to stability and institution-building, elements that ultimately prove essential for companies to obtain financing, investors to participate, and markets to develop," he added.
In turn, Lima Stock Exchange Chairman Rafael Carranza highlighted the relationship among stability, institutional framework, and capital market development.

"We also want to highlight another aspect of Julio that we know particularly well within our ecosystem: his continued support for inPERU and the country's international promotion efforts," Carranza said.
"Julio has participated on numerous occasions in Peruvian delegations visiting the world's leading investment centers and has conveyed the fundamentals of our economy with rigor and clarity," he added.
Upon receiving the award, the BCR governor delivered a few remarks.
"I appreciate this recognition and congratulate nuam on the integration process it is advancing. We hope this process, which began with the stock exchanges, will extend to other areas," Velarde said.
As part of the ceremony, nuam presented Velarde with a bell, a traditional symbol of stock markets.
On this occasion, the bell carried a different meaning: it did not mark a transaction, an issuance, or the start of a trading day, but rather recognized a distinguished career.
The presentation of the award to Velarde marks the launch of an initiative through which nuam seeks to recognize individuals whose careers, across different fields, have contributed to the development of the countries and markets that are part of the organization.
Future editions of the "nuam Recognition" award will be held in Chile, Colombia, and Peru, reaffirming the organization's commitment to recognizing those who have made significant contributions to their respective markets.
