The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, stated on Friday that the situation in Arequipa is "serious" and that measures are being assessed to provide support to those affected by heavy rains recorded in that southern Peruvian region over recent hours.

Amid damage caused by the rainfall, the Head of State said the Executive Branch will see "how to assist our brothers and sisters in Arequipa, as the situation is serious."

These remarks come after the Regional Civil Defense Platform reported that two people lost their lives due to the intense rains recorded recently in the city.

At another point, the top official referred to the formation of his ministerial team and specified that the swearing-in will take place "no later than Friday or Monday."

"It was only yesterday, on the first day, that I made contact with the government’s administrative side. I am now concerned about southern routes, so we will later inform the press in a press briefing," he said in remarks to ATV.

Asked about a possible pardon for former President Pedro Castillo, President Balcazar replied that "at least we have no plans regarding that," referring to the request submitted by his lawyer, Walter Ayala.
