The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, announced on Thursday that he will convene all political leaders for dialogue to address several urgent issues facing the country, including matters related to the upcoming General Elections and citizen insecurity, among others.
"Ideas, criticism, and suggestions are welcome. That is why I will foster an urgent meeting this week with all political leaders to hear their views and help us govern. There is no need for confrontation; we must engage in dialogue with everyone," Balcazar told RPP Noticias.
In that regard, the top official explained that he will begin with "a new style" by reaching out to the leaders of political groups to address key issues.
These include the upcoming General Elections, the situation at the State-owned oil company Petroperu, care within the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), and citizen insecurity.
"I will hold a round of talks with all political parties to ensure the upcoming General Elections. There is a new leader who is interested in dialogue rather than confrontation, as has occurred in recent years," he reiterated.
At another point, the top official said his primary concern is citizen security, stressing that institutions such as the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office) and the Judiciary, among others, should work jointly to counter organized crime in the country.
Evaluation
The President said he will assess the current Cabinet ministers, adding that any who "deserve to remain with us will be invited to do so."
In that regard, the dignitary explained that he will hold talks with current Economy and Finance Minister Denisse Miralles to seek areas of consensus and move forward, noting that he "does not have much time for trial runs."
Concerning citizen security, the top official noted that Peru needs a minister "who understands it properly," adding that if Vicente Tiburcio convinces him, "we could confirm him" in the post.
Petroperu and EsSalud
Regarding Petroperu, he said the matter is a technical issue that will be addressed with advisers from the Executive and Legislative Branches, with the aim of sitting down for dialogue.
"It is a complex issue. In that sense we need to build consensus; I will meet with political leaders because they will take on the Petroperu issue and lay the main pillars for the new government that will take office in the country," he added.
As for the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), the President said it is necessary to improve the institution's services, noting that it has strong professionals and is capable of delivering better care.
Meanwhile, regarding the possible granting of a pardon to Pedro Castillo, the Head of State noted it would be "inappropriate and improper" at this time.
The top official indicated that he respects the separation of powers, as he noted that "there is no formal request."
Regions
The President also said he will work closely with regional governments.
"Of course, about an hour ago I contacted the southern part of the country, which at this moment is the main institutional representative of regional and local governments," Balcazar mentioned.
Lastly, he mentioned that one of the issues to be discussed with the regions is the canon distribution problem, as some receive it while others do not.
