The development of circular value chains requires the implementation of infrastructure projects in connectivity, digitalization, and clean energy, European Union (EU) Ambassador to Peru, Jonathan Hatwell, stated on Friday.

"The development of circular value chains will not be possible without strategic investments in infrastructure, connectivity, digitalization, and clean energy," he said during the inauguration ceremony of the 8th International Circular Economy Forum in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

In this regard, the diplomat noted that the EU is promoting the Global Gateway initiative. It aims to mobilize investments from the bloc, its Member States, and its financial and development institutions, as well as from its private sector, to promote quality infrastructure that helps close gaps.

This is a public- and private-sector initiative with the purpose of mobilizing up to €300 billion (US$345 billion) in investments worldwide between 2021 and 2027.

"In Peru, through Global Gateway, we are supporting water and sanitation, electrification, and renewable energy projects. Soon, we will expand this cooperation to water-reuse projects for irrigation, as well as to initiatives aimed at improving connectivity, mobility, and port security, which are essential for the country's logistical competitiveness," he specified.

Progress and challenges

At the international forum, Ambassador Hatwell invited attendees to share Peru's progress in circular economy, as well as to address the challenges and identify innovative solutions to tackle them by coordinating efforts among the public, private, academic, and civil society sectors.

"We reaffirm our commitment from the EU to remain a strategic partner for Peru in its circular transition, because we are convinced that the future will be truly sustainable only if it is also circular, innovative, and inclusive," he said.

The diplomat stressed that this forum has established itself as a political and technical meeting space to strengthen dialogue, cooperation, and concrete action toward a truly circular economy.

"It is a space that reaffirms the joint commitment of Peru and the European Union to more sustainable, inclusive, and competitive development," he emphasized.

The forum was organized by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministries of Environment; Production; Agrarian Development and Irrigation; Foreign Trade and Tourism; and Housing, Construction, and Sanitation, with the support of the European Union.
