The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Monday highlighted the appointment of Hernando de Soto as President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister), noting it will ensure economic model continuity and stressing that "he knows how to build consensus."

"We have to turn (to Hernando de Soto) to guarantee this economic model and ensure that the new president of the republic, who is due to take office in July, has clear guiding principles and no economic shocks," Balcazar told Exitosa.

Asked about the composition of the Cabinet and the possibility that some current ministers may remain, the Head of State said names are still being evaluated.

The top official stressed that what matters is "the direction the president and the prime minister will set" for the future Council of Ministers.

"(With) those economic guidelines, he will have no problems of any kind with the ministers. The man (De Soto) knows how to build consensus; he is a man of great experience, as am I. Therefore, we cannot have, so to speak, anyone who is not aligned with the prime minister's guidelines," Balcazar said.

At another point, the top official stressed the need to govern with the support of technical experts.

The president said, for example, that the Justice Ministry requires a good lawyer capable of proposing appropriate solutions.

He added that De Soto's capacity for dialogue can be leveraged so the country can benefit from the economist's international contacts.

The Head of State added that, in the coming hours, the government will issue supreme decrees to address the needs of provinces affected by weather-related impacts in Arequipa and other parts of the country.

The top dignitary urged citizens to remain calm in light of these events and the country's political situation.

"With the democratic vocation that defines me, I call for calm in order to fully comply with the constitutional mandate granted to me by Congress. I will not stray or deviate by a single line," he concluded.
