Peru: Congress elects new leader set to assume Presidency of Republic

The Congress plenary, meeting in an extraordinary session, is conducting the process to elect a new chair of the Legislative Branch, who will assume the Presidency of the Republic after the office was left vacant following yesterday's approval of censure motions against Jose Jeri.

The plenary session is being held at the Congress' Jose Faustino Sanchez Carrion Building Auditorium, in accordance with the call issued to lawmakers at the request of Parliament's Acting Chairman, Fernando Rospigliosi.

Candidates

In this election, four candidates are running, each formally registered by their respective parliamentary groups with Congress' Senior Clerk, in compliance with Article 12 of Congress' Regulations:

List No. 1: Segundo Hector Acuña Peralta (Honor and Democracy)
List No. 2: Maria del Carmen Alva Prieto (Popular Action)
List No. 3: Edgard Cornelio Reymundo Mercado (Popular Democratic Bloc)
List No. 4: Jose Maria Balcazar Zelada (Free Peru)

Following the approval of the censure motions against Jose Jeri, Parliament's Board declared the office of Chairman of Congress vacant. As a consequence, the office of President of the Republic of Peru is now vacant.

Accordingly, the candidate who emerges as the winner of this election will assume the Presidency of the Republic.
