With the aim of strengthening bilateral ties and promoting investment projects, among other issues, the Peru-Algeria Fifth Political Consultations took place in Algiers on Sunday.

The Peruvian delegation, headed by the Secretary General of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eric Anderson, was received by the Director General for the Americas at Algeria's Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Hachemi.

Afterward, the Peruvian diplomat held a meeting with the Acting Foreign Affairs Minister and Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Sofiane Chaib.

The political consultations mechanism, chaired by Algerian Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary General, Ambassador Lounes Magramane, made it possible to deepen political dialogue on priority issues on the regional and global agenda.

The delegations highlighted the importance of strengthening multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes under international law, with special emphasis on the situation in Africa and the Middle East due to its consequences for the energy and food sectors, as well as interregional convergence between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

To strengthen bilateral cooperation, the parties agreed to reactivate the Joint Commission to promote areas such as hydrocarbons, potato cultivation, and security, as well as deepen ties in civil protection and cultural matters.

On the economic and trade front, both delegations highlighted Algeria's strategic importance as an energy power, and a catalog containing Peru's investment project offerings was delivered with a view to identifying new opportunities.

In that context, the Peruvian delegation visited SONATRACH, which has significant investments in Peru.

During a meeting with its Chairman and CEO Nouredine Daoud, the sides discussed the possibility of promoting an exchange of experience and technical expertise aimed at strengthening Peruvian capacities in natural resource management and gas exploitation, as well as identifying investment opportunities. Thus, they agreed to hold a technical videoconference.

Finally, both delegations noted that the political dialogue held after four years since the last Political Consultations Mechanism meeting with Algeria constitutes the basis of a relationship aimed at generating concrete benefits in various areas of mutual interest.

They also reaffirmed their willingness to foster cooperation as a tool for bringing Peru and Algeria closer together.

The Peruvian delegation included Director General for Africa, Middle East, and Gulf Countries Ambassador Jorge Raffo as well.
