Batch of 350,000 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines arrives in Peru

The first batch of 350,000 vaccine doses against COVID-19 from Pfizer pharmaceutical company has arrived in Peru, which was received by Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Javier Palacios.

The cargo landed at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport on Thursday evening (local time) on a KLM flight from the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Minister Palacios noted that this new batch will speed up the inoculation process, noting that the work done by President Sagasti and State ministers in the negotiation for the vaccines will benefit more citizens throughout the country.

"The arrival of these doses gives us hope, because we need to make more rapid strides in this immunization process. This batch has gotten here thanks to the efforts made by our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, and the efforts led by the President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti and Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez in order to reach a new agreement with Pfizer," he expressed.

As stated by the Government, Peru will receive 700,000 Pfizer doses each week in May. For this reason, another batch of 350,000 Pfizer doses is expected to arrive on Friday, May 7.

Last Wednesday, President Sagasti announced that Peru had signed a new contract with Pfizer for the acquisition of 12 million doses of the vaccine against COVID-19, thus totaling 60 million doses to inoculate the entire population in the country.

"This will be delivered before the end of the year. Thus, we complete 60 million doses to immunize all Peruvians prior to the end of the year," he said.

In this regard, the Transition and Emergency Government reiterated its commitment to immunize all elderly people before leaving office on July 28.

So far, 1,241,000 Peruvians have received the first dose of the vaccine, while 651,000 have gotten the second one.
