Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed that the decision made by the National Election Board (JNE) to ban the immediate reelection of lawmakers clears up doubts that some parties had and establishes the rules of the game for the
2021 electoral process.
"I want to welcome the fact that, yesterday, the National Election Board (JNE) —the main electoral body in the country— ratified the decision made by all Peruvians in the
December 2018 referendum, regarding the non-reelection of legislators," he expressed.
The JNE, he said, has established that those who were part of the dissolved Congress and the current one are not allowed to run for reelection in 2021 because the current lawmakers were elected to complete a term.
"It is a decision that clears up doubts of some parties and establishes the rules of the game for the electoral process," said the President, noting that his Government respects the independence and autonomy of the JNE.
With this, he remarked, Peruvians have the opportunity to elect and define the composition of a new Parliament in 2021, the year of the country's Independence Bicentennial.
On Friday, the JNE published the resolution that bans the immediate reelection of current legislators and those of the Congress dissolved in September 2019, with a view to the general elections in 2021.
The ban also applies to legislators and their alternates who were deprived of their political rights, those who were suspended, and those who replaced the deceased lawmakers.
