Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Tuesday affirmed that the designation of Jose Elice as new Interior Minister guarantees the strengthening and modernization process of the National Police of Peru.

In statements to TV Peru, the Cabinet chief highlighted Elice's democratic credentials and said he is a professional with knowledge of public management.

"And, with his appointment as Interior Minister, we will show that the proposed measures are going to chart a course for the strengthening of the National Police in a short time," she expressed.

The Prime Minister went on to say that President Francisco Sagasti reaffirmed his commitment to the strengthening of the police institution and that the Government is focusing on that.

Bermudez lamented the appointment of Cluber Aliaga as head of the Interior Ministry and explained that he was requested to tender his resignation as he did not share the Government's stance on the measures adopted to modernize the National Police.

"We have tried to rectify this as soon as possible to avoid harming even more the sensation that may be experienced within the police," she pointed out.

The Prime Minister also noted that former Minister Aliaga voiced opinions contrary to the State policies outlined by President Sagasti, which were supported in a presentation before Congress.

"This is a transitional and emergency Government. So, we cannot allow an act which does not match the idea of unity and the idea of achieving objectives in the short period that we have as a transitional Government," the high-ranking official stated.

"So, we made a clear and concrete decision, by opting for his replacement in a context in which wasting time is not an option. I asked him (Aliaga) to resign when I realized that he had not understood the objectives of this transitional Government," she concluded.
