The Peruvian Government will make every effort to ensure that the largest number of vaccines against coronavirus reach northern Piura region, which has a high epidemiological vulnerability, Health Minister Hernando Cevallos announced on Wednesday.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official specified that this is not so simple because it depends on the stocks that arrive from the international market.

"The distribution of vaccines will be absolutely democratic, taking into account the epidemiological vulnerability of some regions such as Piura," he expressed.

After highlighting the Vaccinathon promoted by the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) in Piura —which has been requested to inoculate citizens with all received vaccines— Minister Cevallos said more doses will arrive next week in the region for rapid distribution.

Likewise, the Cabinet member mentioned that Piura is the region with the least amount of beds or resources in the health sector.

In fact, the northern region does not host a high complexity hospital, and efforts must be undertaken to improve the health response that regions must have, he noted.

More teams

Moreover, Minister Cevallos stressed that the hospital level must be strengthened, adding that President Pedro Castillo pledged to bring a significant amount of equipment to Piura, which will allow the optimization of intermediate levels and intensive care units (ICUs).

"It is a set of donations that have been obtained domestically and internationally, and I think Piura deserves them due to the delay it faces," Cevallos said.

"The national government will make every effort so that hospitals in Piura and throughout the country can be equipped," he added.

Lastly, the Cabinet member mentioned that hospitals must be fully equipped. Thus, he asked Diresa Piura to act urgently and quickly because the
third COVID-19 wave comes ahead.

"We do not know exactly the magnitude, but we must be prepared," he concluded.
