The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Wednesday morning reported that Vladimiro Montesinos was transferred to Ancon II prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

"We have transferred Vladimiro Montesinos to Ancon II prison for him to serve the remaining of his sentence," he wrote on Twitter.

"No person deprived of liberty will get a privileged treatment or will be allowed to get by the security at prisons to continue committing crime, under the Bicentennial Government," the tweet reads.

Montesinos —the former advisor to Alberto Fujimori's Government (1990-2000)— has been held at the Maximum Security Detention Center (CEREC) in the Callao Naval Base since 2001.

He is serving sentences for crimes of corruption of officials, usurpation of public office, money laundering, kidnapping, conspiracy, arms trafficking, aggravated homicide, and enforced disappearance.

The Peruvian Navy and the National Penitentiary Institute have recently conducted an investigation into phone calls made by Montesinos during the electoral campaign.

Former Defense Minister Nuria Esparch reported that the investigation into this event would involve up to 50 Navy officers.

Update at 6:08 p.m. (local time): Justice Minister Anibal Torres has reported that Vladimiro Montesinos was transferred to Ancon I prison to continue serving his sentence.
