Main Square
The Main Square is home to the impressive Cusco Cathedral, the main Catholic church in the city. The best time to visit it is during the day in order to appreciate the contrast between the mountains and the city. In the evening, the street lighting enhances the architectural beauty of the place.
Qoricancha Temple
Also known as the Temple of the Sun,
Qoricancha was a religious, geographical, and political center in Cusco, and the inside is believed to have been covered by gold plates. The impressive stones with which the temple was built fit perfectly together, and the place is full of rich history.
Sacsayhuaman
This
Inca ceremonial fortress is considered the greatest architectural work of its time. Located 2 km away from Cusco, the place offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. The celebration of the Incan sun god,
Inti Raymi, takes place on its esplanade.
Sacred Valley of the Incas
Located at the end of the Urubamba Valley, in the province of the same name, the
Sacred Valley is a mixture of archaeological remains, indigenous peoples, and varied mountainous landscapes.
This land provides the best conditions for agriculture: excellent weather, fertile soils, and the Vilcanota River water. Besides, it is the ideal setting to practice adventure sports and other leisure activities.
Ollantaytambo
It is the only inhabited Inca city in Peru.
This place is situated halfway between Cusco and
Machu Picchu and has an impressive urban design with (non-agricultural) resistant terraces.
