13:31 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jun. 11.

Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire in southern Peru, is a magical and perfect destination to enjoy its rich culture and the beautiful landscapes of the Andes.

More and more tourists choose to visit Cusco drawn by its attractions. The peak season began in May.

This month —on the occasion of its jubilee celebrations— the so-called Imperial City hosts a range of activities such as the famous Inti Raymi.

If you have not been to Cusco yet but you are planning to, here is a list of must-visit places while in this magnificent Andean city.

Main Square

The Main Square is home to the impressive Cusco Cathedral, the main Catholic church in the city. The best time to visit it is during the day in order to appreciate the contrast between the mountains and the city. In the evening, the street lighting enhances the architectural beauty of the place.

Qoricancha Temple

Also known as the Temple of the Sun, Qoricancha was a religious, geographical, and political center in Cusco, and the inside is believed to have been covered by gold plates. The impressive stones with which the temple was built fit perfectly together, and the place is full of rich history.

Sacsayhuaman

This Inca ceremonial fortress is considered the greatest architectural work of its time. Located 2 km away from Cusco, the place offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. The celebration of the Incan sun god, Inti Raymi, takes place on its esplanade.

Sacred Valley of the Incas

Located at the end of the Urubamba Valley, in the province of the same name, the Sacred Valley is a mixture of archaeological remains, indigenous peoples, and varied mountainous landscapes.

This land provides the best conditions for agriculture: excellent weather, fertile soils, and the Vilcanota River water. Besides, it is the ideal setting to practice adventure sports and other leisure activities.

Ollantaytambo

It is the only inhabited Inca city in Peru. This place is situated halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu and has an impressive urban design with (non-agricultural) resistant terraces.

Machu Picchu

Peru's iconic tourist site is surrounded by a mountainous tropical rainforest. Getting to and from this Inca Llaqta requires long walks. In 2007, it was voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll. Its architectural design and landscape provide an unforgettable experience to visitors.
