Peru: Supreme Court did not issue resolution concerning Keiko Fujimori's cassation appeal

12:36 | Lima, Aug. 9.

The Supreme Court on Friday did not issue a resolution concerning the cassation appeal submitted by former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori's defense, in order to regain her freedom.

Peruvian Supreme Court's Criminal Chamber Head Hugo Principe explained there was a disagreement in the judges' vote regarding the appeal.

According to him, magistrates Ivan Sequeiros and Iris Pacheco voted to declare the appeal inadmissible, while Zavina Chavez, Jorge Castañeda, and Principe partially accepted the request and decided to reduce the 36-month preventive detention to 18 months for Fujimori and others.

Therefore, a resolution was not reached, and the cassation appeal will remain in process.

Likewise, the Judiciary informed that —since the required votes were not reached (4 votes)— the court will summon a judge to settle the issue.

However, the court declared valid the cassation appeal of Fuerza Popular political party's former treasurer Luis Mejia Lecca.

The Judicial Branch declared well-founded the request made by the Prosecutor's Office to imprison Fujimori because of the danger of obstruction of justice that implied keeping her free.

After having fled to Japan and traveled to Chile —from where he was extradited to Peru— the Fujimori patriarch was sentenced for crimes against human rights and corruption committed during his term in office.
