Peru will undertake efforts for the European Union (EU) to become an important consumer of pisco —the Andean country's flagship drink— in the coming five years, Production Minister Raul Perez-Reyes affirmed.
Besides exporting this Peruvian beverage to the United States, Spain, and Chile, the Inca nation seeks to expand its offer to other countries.
"We are already working in
Russia and Thailand, and our goal is to enter the European Union (market)," Perez-Reyes explained.
"In the next five years, we want to be well positioned in this market, and see it (the EU) as our main trade partner," he added.
In this sense, the cabinet member remarked his portfolio works jointly with the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) to achieve this objective through the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru).
In addition, he highlighted
pisco prices are higher in the EU.
Consumption
On the other hand, the minister noted
pisco consumption levels doubled in the past decade, and the goal for this year is to exceed 2 million liters.
"Last year,
pisco consumption stood at 1.8 million liters, and now we want to surpass 2 million liters, which means a 6.5% rise (…)," he said.
Remarks were made during his participation in a ceremony on the occasion of National
Pisco Day.
As is known, this date is celebrated nationwide every fourth Sunday of July.
