Peru: President Sagasti recognized as Supreme Chief of Armed Forces and Police

The new President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti was on Saturday morning recognized as Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru.

The ceremony saw the presence of Ministers Nuria Esparch (Defense) and Ruben Vargas (Interior).

It was also attended by the Chief of the Joint Command Major General Cesar Astudillo, as well as by general commanders of the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru.

The event took place at the Government Palace in Lima.

As is known, President Sagasti took office last Tuesday, after having become Congress chairman a day earlier.

He replaces resigning Manuel Merino, who stepped down last Sunday —after less than one week in office and amid major protests.
