The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, paid tribute to workers as International Workers' Day is commemorated today and recalled the struggle of the Chicago Martyrs to establish the eight-hour workday.

The Head of state noted that the development of societies owes much to the workforce, which must be valued.

Likewise, the top official mentioned the struggle of the Chicago Martyrs in the United States. He recalled that workers who were fighting to establish a maximum eight-hour workday were brutally repressed in 1886.

"That blood shed by the Chicago union martyrs, far from setting back the labor movement, fueled the flame of courage and principled unity, which later enabled them to achieve the eight-hour workday worldwide," he said in his message posted on social media.
