18:04 | Lima, Feb. 27.

Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry is optimistic about the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo, the ministry's head Gustavo Meza-Cuadra said on Thursday.

The government official noted that his team is paying close attention to the extradition process of Toledo, who is currently detained in the United States, although he does not know the date of his return to the South American country.

"The Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Prosecutor's Office, and the Judiciary work in close cooperation with each other. The steps are met in the first extradition request, so we are confident we'll be hearing some good news soon," he expressed.

Peru requested Toledo's extradition from the United States within the framework of the investigations over alleged corruption offenses in the awarding of the South Interoceanic Highway Project to Brazilian company Odebrecht.

When asked about the extradition of ex-Supreme Judge Cesar Hinostroza from Spain, the minister said that the process has entered its final stage.
