Peru: Blueberry exports up 50% in 2019

17:17 | Lima, Feb. 6.

Last year, blueberry shipments totaled US$824.81 million, a 50% expansion compared to the amount registered in 2018, the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Thursday.

Within this framework, the guild indicated that blueberries held the second position among the products exported from the farming and agro-industrial subsector.

"The healthy trend is the main reason for such demand abroad, as they (blueberries) contain nutritional properties such as antioxidants, as well as vitamins B, C, and E," it highlighted.

Another fundamental aspect that has positioned Peru as the main exporter of this fruit is composed of the joint efforts undertaken by the public and private sectors.

In this sense, the business guild will continue contributing to the agricultural sector's development by organizing various events such as the Superfoods Summit and the Expoalimentaria fair.

ADEX Agro-exports Department Manager Susana Yturry highlighted the effort by the State-run National Agricultural Sanitation Service (Senasa) in lifting phytosanitary barriers in favor of this product, which may soon enter India.

Markets

From a total of 36 destinations, the United States (US$466.59 million; +66.4%) and the Netherlands (US$183.17 million; +49.7%) received 78.7% of shipments of this fruit.

Among the top five were also China and the United Kingdom. The Asian market stood out for the increase in such imports (112.7%), since these went from US$33.42 million (2018) to US$71.09 million (2019), thus becoming the third-largest importer of this Peruvian foodstuff.
