Over 8.5 million mothers celebrate Mother's Day in Peru

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) has estimated that there are 8,529,000 mothers in Peru, thus accounting for 64,4% of all women in the country (13,241,000), it reported Sunday, May 10, on the occasion of Mother's Day.

According to INEI, 124,000 Peruvian mothers are under 20 years old, 6,524,000 are aged between 20 and 59, and 1,881,000 are older adults, meaning they are aged 60 or older. Moreover, 315,000 of the older adults are octogenarian (80 years or older).
 
Mothers gave birth to first child at age 22

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics' (INEI) Population and Family Health Survey (ENDES) 2017-2018, on average, half of mothers aged 25-49 years gave birth to their first child at 22 years old. By the area of residence, women residing in urban areas gave birth to their first child at age 24 and, residents in rural areas at an earlier age, 20 years.

When it comes to the language they speak, mothers speaking a foreign language gave birth to their first child at age 25, those who speak Spanish at age 23, and the mothers who speak a native language (Quechua or Aymara/native jungle language/others) at age 21.
 
Mothers in Peru have an average of 2.2 children each

Between 2017 and 2018, the average number of children per woman aged 15-49 in the South American country was 2.2. By the area of residence, women residing in urban areas had an average of 2.0 children, while those in rural areas had an average of 3.1 each.
 
The regions with the highest average number of children per woman are Loreto (3.4), Ucayali (3.2), Amazonas (3.0), and Huancavelica (2.9).

President Vizcarra greets mothers on their day

On Saturday, President Martin Vizcarra sent greetings to all Peruvian mothers ahead of their day, and stressed that the best demonstration of love is by taking care of them.

According to the Head of State, each mother constitutes the being that means the most to a person, being a symbol of dedication, commitment and love for children.
