Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed that Peru is one of the few countries in the world that are constantly reviewing the COVID-19 death figures as the pandemic continues, adding that it will carry such task forward in complete transparency.

"Every country completes this verification once the epidemiological crisis is over. This shows we strive to act with the utmost transparency, and we are going to continue to do so," Mazzetti stated.

According to the high-ranking official, the current death toll reflects the difficulties experienced by the health system in a country like Peru, with a very diverse geography and communication hurdles at different levels of government.

Noting that the number of deaths is significant, Mazzetti said that the figures would have been higher if the pandemic containment measures had not been adopted

"They are not exponential growth figures, but progressive growth figures that reflect the difficulties experienced by our health system in a country with a very diverse geography," she indicated.

The Cabinet member remarked that the mismatch between the figures of the health system and those of other systems, such as the National Death Registry Information System (SINADEF), is the subject of analysis right now.

The government official also recalled that her sector prepared two reports to make death figures more accurate, thus adding more than 6,600 people to the death toll.

"Based on this experience, we have developed a system to constantly review the figures in such a way that, day after day, we are going to consider potential discrepancies until figures stabilize," she stressed.
