The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu—one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Peru and the world—now has a new Master Plan for the current five-year period (2026-2031).

The document, whose implementation is set to extend from this year through 2031, was approved by Resolution No. 000076-2026 of the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State's (Sernanp) Executive Presidency.

This measure was published in the Legal Regulations Bulletin of the Official Gazette El Peruano on Wednesday.

The regulation states that the approved text is "the highest-level planning document for the aforementioned Natural Protected Area."

"By articulating objectives, strategies, indicators, targets, and specific commitments with stakeholders, the Master Plan becomes a key tool for decision-making at the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu," the resolution stated.

The administration of the aforementioned sanctuary will be responsible for implementing the document.

Each Natural Protected Area in the country must have this type of document. These are prepared through participatory processes and reviewed every five years.

Since December 9, 1993, the site has been recognized as a Mixed World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This designation falls within the framework of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
