During the first quarter of 2024, 428,782 tourists arrived at Cusco's airport, a figure 76.2% higher over the same period in 2023, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo highlighted.

In 2023, the Velasco Astete International Airport registered the arrival of 1,498,953 passengers —a 5.4% increase compared to 2022.

In that sense, Galdo indicated that tourism has been proving considerable recovery levels in Cusco, with quite significant figures in terms of tourists arriving in the southern Peruvian city by air.

"Not only that, this greater arrival in the Imperial City is reflected in growth in visits to Cusco's most emblematic tourist sites," she underlined.

Minister Galdo said the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu received 120,780 visitors between January and March, which meant a 67% increase (+48,000) compared to the same months in 2023.

"70.8% of visitors to the Historic Sanctuary were foreigners and 29.2% were Peruvian nationals," she indicated.

Between January and April 2024, 234,073 visits to the Sacsayhuaman Esplanade were registered —an additional flow of 131,000 over the same period last year. It meant a 127% expansion in the number of visitors.

"These are positive figures, which prove that we are on the right path. From the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) we have been working intensively to boost inbound and domestic tourism at the national level, and Cusco is essential in that regard," she expressed.

"Tourism generates jobs and economic reactivation for Peru's regions," Galdo highlighted from the Imperial City where she attended the Inti Raymi staging event one of the largest festivities in Peru.
