Peru to receive and provide support to compatriots deported from U.S.

Peru recognizes the right of States to deport foreigners who have entered their territory illegally. In this regard, the Peruvian Government would authorize the eventual arrival of U.S. airplanes bringing back compatriots deported from the United States, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer stated on Sunday night.

The diplomacy head said that, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), 1,060,000 Peruvian citizens reside in the United States, of whom an estimated 300,000 (20% to 30%) are in irregular migratory situation.

"Of course (the arrival of these airplanes would be authorized)," Schialer responded during an interview with Punto Final investigative journalism TV program on Sunday night.

"Any State has the authority, including Peru and the United States, to not wish to keep in its country people who have infringed the law, either by committing an immigration offense, in the case of Peru, or a crime, an immigration crime, in the case of the United States," he added.

The diplomat reported that since 2022, 12,000 Peruvian nationals have been deported from the United States due to immigration reasons.

In this regard, the ambassador explained that before 2022, the arrival of Peruvians was not as significant in number, and they used to arrive on commercial flights.}

However, from that year onwards, each flight with this purpose brings around 100 fellow citizens, which requires an airplane exclusively for that route, not necessarily a military one.

Support for deported Peruvians

Minister Schialer underlined that this issue is of great concern to the Peruvian Government.

Consequently, it has been decided that compatriots arriving under these circumstances will be provided with full support in Peru for their social and labor reintegration.

This implies medical care, first and foremost, along with full support from the Executive Branch social sectors, such as the Ministries of Women, Labor, Development and Social Inclusion.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has tripled its legal services and assistance in 16 Peruvian consulates in the United States, advising fellow citizens on issues such as how to act in this situation, the legal framework, and how to manage their assets left in that country.
