Peru: Police destroy lab with more than 3 tons of coca leaves

11:42 | La Mar (Ayacucho region), Mar. 30.

A specialized unit of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) found and destroyed a rustic laboratory used for the production of cocaine alkaloids in San Jose population center, La Mar province (Ayacucho region) —an area part of the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).

At the scene, the agents found a total of 3,450 kg. of coca leaves in the maceration process, as well as 5,000 kg. of detritus (remains from the drug's manufacturing phase).

Similarly, they found 476 kg. of chemical inputs, including gasoline and calcium hydroxide, which along with the crops and the remains were incinerated —once the police had gathered the necessary samples for further investigation.

During this operation, the specialized PNP unit also discovered a total of 84.2 kg. of cocaine alkaloids.

The illegal laboratory consisted of a 25 x 7 meter maceration pond, and another 3 x 1.5 meter settling pond.

According to police information, the operation was carried out by members of the VRAEM Maneuvers against Illicit Drug Trafficking Division and a Public Ministry representative thanks to the intelligence work against drug trafficking that has been conducted in said area.
