Peru was named the Leading Culinary Destination in South America for 2021 by the
reported on Wednesday.
The awards were handed out —in an emotional and symbolic event— at Expo 2020 Dubai's
Peruvian pavilion with the presence of PromPeru Executive-President Amora Carbajal and World Travel Awards founder Graham Cooke.
As is known, Peruvian restaurant Central —owned by chefs Pia Leon and Virgilio Martinez— was chosen as the most outstanding in South America, according to the ranking of The World's 50 Best Restaurants for 2021.
Central is ranked fourth on the list of the globe's 50 best restaurants, while the also Peruvian Maido —owned by Mitsuharu Tsumura— holds the seventh place on this prestigious list.
"The awards granted to our country reaffirm the tourism-related positioning of Peru in the world as a destination relying on vast cultural and natural wealth, in addition to highlighting the magnificence of Machu Picchu as a leading tourist destination in the region and (PromPeru) as leading State-run agency in promoting tourism,"
Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez expressed.
The World Travel Awards serve to recognize and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.
It is worth mentioning that the accolades were awarded within the framework of the symbolic inauguration of the Peruvian pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai.
