Peru and Canada renewed their commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship on various matters of interest, highlighting the excellent level of mutual understanding.
This was established during the 10th Bilateral Consultation and Coordination Meeting, held in Ottawa, Canada.
During the event, both delegations agreed to deepen cooperation against transnational organized crime, highlighting collaboration in port security, the Container Control Program, and progress in detecting illicit vessels.
On economic matters, the importance of the Free Trade Agreement in force since 2009—which makes Canada Peru's fourth-largest trading partner—was reaffirmed.
Likewise, both countries expressed mutual interest in increasing trade and investment, closing infrastructure gaps, and promoting strategic projects, including Government-to-Government schemes, market diversification, and supply chain security.
In turn, Canada reiterated its support for Peru's OECD accession process, with emphasis on public governance, environmental management, and sustainable development standards.
Broad areas of agreement were identified on environmental and science-and-technology issues, highlighting wildfire prevention—which led Peru to formally join the Kananaskis Charter—and progress toward signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development (CONIDA) and the Canadian Space Agency for cooperation in satellite observation and disaster risk reduction.
Both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, international law, and security at forums such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the United Nations.
They also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in defense, cybersecurity, education, agriculture, and responsible mining, recognizing Peru as a reliable supplier of critical minerals.
The Peruvian delegation was led by Director General for the Americas, Ambassador Roberto Rodriguez. He was accompanied by Ambassadors Maria Eugenia Chiozza and Manuel Talavera, along with diplomatic officials in Canada.
Representing Canada, the meeting was presided over by Director General for South America and Hemispheric Affairs, Ambassador Wendy Drukier. She was accompanied by officials from various sectors.
